Week 3 - Islamization of Knowledge

Assalamualaikum.

What is the islamization of knowledge? The concept is wide and it surely brings various interpretations to each person. What we understand from it is that we extract Islamic perspectives and points of view in each thing or knowledge that we learn. That is, to perceive everything to be for His sake, this is very encouraged in Islam. We believe that this concept is practiced widely in IIUM in its very core of learning. What we noticed is, the learning content of almost every subject has Islamic input in it.

People who influenced you the most on the concept:
  • Lecturers
1. Dr. Rozina binti Abdul Ghani - She puts in Islamic viewpoints in everything that she said though at times it is unrelated to the learning content. She always inspires and encourages the students to always remember that Allah is the Most Powerful and the Master and we need to be aware of our roles as His creatures.

2. Mr. Mahmudul Hasan - He is the lecturer of literature subjects and he has put a great deal of Islamic values in his teaching, for example in 20th Century subject. Western literature has lots of content which is very contradicting to Islam, hence he always put things back together and explained it in Islamic viewpoints so that the students will know and would not blindly follow the Western ideas.

  • Writers
1. Harun Yahya - He is one of the most well-known Muslim authors who have written very important books on political, faith-related and scientific issues. His pen-name is made up of the names of Prophet Harun and Prophet Yahya, in memory of the two esteemed prophets who fought against lack of faith. The Prophet's seal on the cover of his every book is symbolic and is linked to their contents. It represents the Qur'an and the Prophet Muhammad SAW, who is the last prophet that was sent from Allah SWT to the Muslim community. The author's works focus only on one goal, which is to convey the Qur'an messages to people and to encourage them to think about the faith-related issues deeply.

2. Hlovate - One of Malay writers who identity and gender is unknown to others. This writer wrote several novels which focused on Islamic viewpoints and how to change ourselves to be a better Muslim. Even though the writer wrote novels which are related to love relationships between men and women, unlike other Malay writers, the writer try to convey his/her idea of love differently which is not based on lust and desire, but based on the Qur'an and sunnah. The writer also relates the stories with the worldly affairs and the way he/she attracts the readers to know more about Islam is very interesting and unique.
